JOURNAL’S HISTORY
According to the Statutes, our Society was founded on May 17th, 1958, in the city Rio de Janeiro, under the name “Sociedade Brasileira de Colposcopia”. The 1st Brazilian Colposcopy Congress was held in Belo Horizonte from September 13th to 16th, 1964. During the event, President Prof. João Paulo Rieper honored Prof. Clovis Salgado as Honorary President; and paid posthumous tribute to Prof. Hans Hinselmann (1884–1959). The General Secretary, Alberto Henrique Rocha, also contributed to the Publications and Annals Committee. The Scientific Committee was led by Lucas Monteiro Machado, the Finance Committee by José Salvador Silva, and the Social Committee by Lucas Viana Machado. Delzio Bicalho chaired the Scientific and Commercial Exhibition Committee. The primary purpose of the 1st Brazilian Colposcopy Congress was to unite Brazilian colposcopists to assess their collective strength and the actual progress of the specialty in the country. “The work presented shows that this goal was fully achieved. Furthermore, there are incentives for new work, and we can look forward to the future of colposcopy in Brazil with confidence.” Among the authors who presented papers and conferences at this Congress were G. Mestwerdt, Alberto Henrique Rocha, Ruy Pimenta Filho, João Paulo Rieper, Hildegard Stoltz, Maria das Mercês Pontes Cunha, and F. Victor Rodrigues. The topics covered included Microcarcinoma of the Uterine Cervix, Congenital Ectropion, Advantages and Difficulties of Colpophotography, Cervicitis, and the Squamo-columnar Junction in Childhood and Adolescence, among others.
The first issue of the ABPTGIC journal was launched in October 2006 under the name “Brazilian Journal of Genitoscopy” (Revista Brasileira de Genitoscopia).
