How I use microablative fractional radiofrequency (MAFRF) to treat lichen sclerosus

Lichen sclerosus is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease that affects the vulvar and perianal regions, causing intense pruritus and
vulvar atrophy, with carcinogenic potential when adequately treated. Its main histological characteristics include hyalinization
of collagen fibers and lichenoid inflammatory infiltrate. Conventional treatment is based on the use of high-potency topical
corticosteroids for an extended period, aiming to control pruritus, anatomical deformities and malignant progression.
However, long-term use of this medication can induce vulvar atrophy, dry skin, telangiectasias and secondary infections.
Therefore, adjuvant treatments may be useful in reducing these side effects. Microablative fractional radiofrequency (MAFRF)
has already been used in cosmetic skin treatments that seek to improve skin tropism through remodeling and stimulation of
collagen synthesis. Therefore, this type of energy can be used as an adjuvant tool by increasing the production of collagen and
elastin, improving epithelial trophism and consequently itching, burning and hypochromia, with a direct impact on affected
patients’ sexual life’s quality and self-esteem.
