Villoglandular adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix (AVG): report of an “in situ” case and an analysis of the challenges for cytological diagnosis

Villoglandular adenocarcinoma (VGA) is a rare type of cancer that affects the uterine cervix. Early diagnosis can help preserve fertility, since this neoplasm is rarely associated with lymphovascular invasion. Its cytological diagnosis is challenging, since the cytomorphological criteria are considered subtle when compared to other types of adenocarcinomas, which can lead to underdiagnosis. Another difficulty is its similarity to other entities, benign or malignant, that can simulate it. Understanding its characteristics helps to increase the potential of cytology as an effective auxiliary tool in the diagnosis of this disease.
