Cytopathology is a specialty that studies cells for diagnostic purposes. The most well-known application is the detection of precancerous lesions in the cervix, as seen in the Papanicolaou test. The training of professionals varies in Brazil, and physicians, pharmacists, and biomedical scientists can analyze cytological tests. There is a lack of organization among the different specialties, leading to two distinct approaches: cytopathology, performed by medical pathologists, and clinical cytology, performed by pharmacists and biomedical scientists. Proper training involves basic concepts in cytology, staining techniques, microbiology, and training in identifying atypias, with continuing education courses being essential. The lack of adequate training among professionals leads to incorrect approaches, compromising the effectiveness of the Papanicolaou test.
