Vaccination for men who have sex with men

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has over 200 subtypes, some of which can cause neoplastic lesions in the anogenital region. While anal cancer is more common in women, it is particularly prevalent among Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM), especially those with HIV and those who practice receptive anal sex. HPV vaccination is recommended primarily for children and adolescents from the age of 9, before the onset of sexual activity, and can be extended up to 26 years old. However, data on vaccinating MSM over the age of 26 are limited. The Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm) recommends vaccinating MSM up to 45 years old. The National Immunization Program (PNI) includes this age group only for immunosuppressed patients and victims of sexual violence. Population-wide vaccination for those aged between 26 and 45 years is not considered cost-effective due to decreased efficacy after 26 years old. Health professionals play a crucial role in advising on vaccination, especially for MSM, preferably up to 26 years old.
