The colposcopic exam is a detailed medical procedure used to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva with a colposcope, a
microscope with light and magnification. It is indicated to investigate changes detected in preventive exams, such as the Pap
smear, or symptoms like abnormal bleeding. During the exam, the doctor may apply acetic acid or iodine solutions to identify
lesions, such as infections or signs of cervical cancer. The procedure is generally quick and minimally painful, but it may cause
some discomfort. If necessary, a biopsy may be performed. The exam follows specific steps, such as explaining the procedure
to the patient, obtaining consent, taking the patient’s medical history, positioning the patient, and inspecting the vulvar area
before inserting the vaginal speculum. After the application of acetic acid, iodine may be used to observe cellular changes.
The exam is completed with the careful removal of the speculum and communication of the results to the patient.
